Ocean Currents Now Available
Well we have been promising it for sometime and now we are pleased to announce that Ocean Currents are now available to be added to your sea surface temperature and sea colour images. And the good news is that there is no extra cost for subscribers.
Once you have selected the area for your image you can add ocean surface current information simply by clicking on the red Currents On/Off button to the left of the image.. The currents will appear on your image as a series of black arrows. The direction of each arrow indicates the direction the current is running and the length of the arrow indicates its relative strength (i.e knots per hour) See Fig below.
In addition to visualising the currents over your image we added the extra facilty of being able to read the speed and direction of each current arrow. To do this all you need do is hold down the Ctrl and Shift buttons simultaneously on the keyboard and then click on the start of the arrow (the opposite end to the arrow head) with the left mouse button.
A small box with details on the current arrow (See Fig to the right) will open up in the top right corner of your image. At the same time the colour of the particular current arrow that you are querying will change to Purple.
The details within the box indicate the speed of the current in knots per hour (e.g. 1.64 kts) and the compass direction in which the current is running (e.g 193.5 degrees). Also included is the lat/long of the current reading (in decimal degrees and degrees, minutes and seconds) and the date of the information. Note that the position, current speed and current direction all refer to the position at the start of the arrow where you clicked (i.e the end opposite the arrowhead). The current information is downloaded from NOAA each night at 7pm (AEST) and depending on when you view your data could be a up to 2 days old. You can however look at the previous 6 days of information and monitor the changes that are occurring daily.
Full details on how to add and read the currents can be found on our web site by clicking here or simply try it yourself.
