Seasurface.com Newsletter

Dear Customer,

Winners of Free 12 Month Annual Subscriptions Announced.

Thank you to everyone who completed our survey on our trial sea colour product. The feedback you provided was very helpful in planning the next stage of the product. As you can see we extended the free trial beyond our expected completion whilst we undertook negotiations with our Licensor for long term access and whilst we also developed a new interface (See article below).

In the meantime the lucky subscriber who won the free 12 month subscription was Greg Trotter of NSW. The non subscriber who won was Swampy Perrin of Qld.

Two New Sea Colour Announcements.

This month we have two great announcements with regard our sea colour products.

Firstly, following successful negotiations with our Licensor (the WA Land Information Authority, Landgate) we are pleased to announce long term access to the satellites that supply sea colour images. This will however, mean that there will be a charge for this service but the good news is that we listened to your feedback in the survey and have been able to keep the fee to a minimum i.e. $35 a year for subscribers who elect to receive this optional service.

The new prices will become effective from 2 June 2008. All new or renewing subscriptions taken out after this date will have the option of taking out the extra sea colour product. SST prices will remain unchanged. We have also decided that as a bonus to all existing subscribers free access to sea colour will continue until the end of the subscription. Also for any subscribers who haven't renewed yet, if you renew before 2 June you can also get free access to sea colour for up to another 12 months.

Secondly, is the development of a new interface for viewing both sea colour and sea surface temperature (SST). For daylight Terra and Aqua satellite passes (where both sea colour and SST data are available) you will now be able to easily view both charts. When 2 charts are available a slide will appear down the left of your window. To progress from one view to the other all you need to do is, left button click on the red dot, and whilst holding down the button, slide it either up or down to fade from chart to the other. This allows you to quickly see what is happening with regard sea colour under those very interesting temperature gradients and vice versa. If no slide appears then this means there is corresponding sea colour chart available for that satellite pass.

The two images to the right have been generated by just sliding the red button on the side from SST to Sea Colour. You can see some high chlorophyll concentrations in those temperature gradients just off Lake Macquarie and Sydney.

For more information on sea colour and how to use this new service please read the user manual by clicking here.

These upgrades require users to have a recent version of Java installed. Our system tests if your version is compatible. If not we will redirect you to where the latest version can be downloaded. If you experience difficulties in viewing your images i.e. there are horizontal lines across the viewing window then it may mean that there is a conflict with your version of Java and your graphics card. This can usually be fixed by updating to a later version by clicking here and following the instructions to download Java.

SST Publicity

The great publicity about the benefits of using our products continue to appear in the media.

The latest was an article in Issue 66 of Bluewater magazine. The article on page 54 was a response by us in reply to a question from a Tony Jones in Sydney. The article provides an excellent example of the Eastern Australian Current (EAC) that appeared in December 2007. Other articles in the same issue emphasise the importance of watching those sea temperature charts for determining the best spots for Mako fishing.

The second, an article in the March edition of Modern Fishing, written by Alistair McGlashan, talks about the importance of new technology, such as sea surface temperatures charts, in locating albacore concentrations.

We thoroughly recommend reading all these publications.

New Data Export Facility.

We are pleased to announce that now all users, in addition to being able to print or save their image to their hard drive, can now choose to export their sea surface temperature and sea colour charts in a new georeferenced format suitable for importing into a range of software packages on the market.

To make this easy for you we have included an additional third option once you click on the the Print/Export button. This new button is called Export Image and when you click on it you can then choose to download or email your image as a georeferenced JPEG image as well a JPEG World file (JPW). You then need to save them in the same directory somewhere on your hard disk for later downloading by the software package that you are using. One such package where this data can be used is the PC product Memory-Map, Marine. (See article below).

This new download facility is available to all users for both SST and Sea Colour images. Where Sea Colour is not available for download the buttons will be greyed out.

Seasurface.com and Memory-Map Announce New Cooperative Arrangement.

Seasurface.com and Memory-Map are please to announce a new cooperative arrangement whereby our SST and sea colour images can now be downloaded, imported and synchronised with marine charts in the Memory-Map Marine software product (Memory-Map "Navigator" license upgrade required). This will allow use of our images and marine charts on your laptop, pocket-PC or Smartphone. With a GPS connected you can also show your GPS track/position on both the images and charts simultaneously.

With Memory-Map Marine installed on your laptop or on-board computer all you need do is download the latest SST or Sea Colour image (using the new export facility announced above) and point Memory-Map to the file. It's that easy. You can download a free 10 day trial of the Memory-Map software from Memory-Map. Existing seasurface subscribers can download images suitable for importing into Memory-Map at no charge.

Non subscribers can also try both for free by downloading 7 day old SST charts from us and also using the free 10 day trial from Memory-Map.

Memory-Map Marine comes complete with software plus a range of marine hydrographic charts. Various packages are available covering; Qld North; Qld South; Victoria & Tas; NSW; and NSW & Qld South.

As an introductory offer we are pleased to offer all of our subscribers a special 15% discount on any copies of the Memory-Map Marine software purchased before 30 June 2008. For these special prices and an order form click here.

We have also added a special section to our on site How to use SST manual on how to download our images, import them into Memory-Map Marine and synchronise them with a marine chart. Memory Map also have an extensive manual incorporated with their product.

Helpful Tips

Quick Look Images
A number of Express Service subscribers have called recently to say that their image has become very pixelated. Investigation revealed that they had accidentally turned on "Quick Looks". These were originally designed where users had a laptop connected to the Internet via only a slow mobile or satellite phone modem. The image quality was reduced to speed the delivery time. They are not needed for normal PC operation or when using a modern broadband access card in your laptop.

For convenience we have globally turned everyone off and if you definitely need them back on it can be done next time you log on. Sorry if this caused you any problems but eveyone who called did not know that they turned them on and it was easier to turn all off globally than call each individual subscriber. With today's modern technology there should not be a need to continue this service much longer and therefore we are thinking about removing the option. If you still need it, we would be pleased to here from you.
